1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster
Chassis No. 7500146
Engine No. 7500172
Body No. 7500071
Production of the 300SL Roadster was initiated in response to the American demand for the sport driving style of the 300SL Coupe, but with an open top and easier entry than was allowed by the distinctive, if less convenient, 'gullwing' doors. It was first shown to the public in spring of 1957 at the Geneva show. Marketed as a convertible, the hardtop was an option. Over 500 roadsters were built in 1957, but with production dwindling down to a mere 26 by 1963 the total number made was only 1,858. This car was the 146th chassis built during the first year of roadster production and accordingly has a few coupe details, such as the style of wiper arms. This was also before the factory added bright aluminum moldings along the doorsills. Even rarer, it has the 9.5 to 1 compression engine which appears to have been made for the American market only, a possible consequence of the higher octane gasoline available. It is one of the approximately 26 roadsters with factory installed knock-off wheels.
We believe that the first owner, an American, had connections in Germany and a means of getting a car directly from the factory. This is one of the very first roadsters to have a hardtop, which were hand fitted at the factory and are rarely interchangeable from car to car. Yet according to factory records, hardtops were not available until months after this car was delivered.
When this roadster arrived at our shop it was quite literally a basket case. Many years before someone had started to restore it, but apparently without the proper knowledge or experience. It subsequently sat unfinished for many years before it was brought to our attention. Fortunately, most of the original parts were still with the car.
Following a complete restoration, it was well received at various concours events winning Best Roadster at the 1991 Gull Wing Group International Convention and Best of Show at the 1992 Lime Rock Vintage Festival. It then enjoyed an active life as a good weather driver for its New England owner.
“The Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadster with its 240 b.h.p. fuel injection engine, is one of the world's finest and fastest sports cars.”
