The rare combination of power, beauty and history that defines the 1958 Ferrari 335 Sport has been recognized with the Peninsula Classics 2019 Best of the Best Award. This award is “an accolade presented to the world’s most exceptional classic car.” It is chosen from an elite group of Best of Show winners from eight of the world’s major concours events. The task of choosing a winner falls to an equally elite panel of judges. Of the eight finalists, two were Paul Russell and Company restorations. Also vying for the top honor was the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn-Kurier. A car that we restored sixteen years ago!
Accepting the award at the Paris gala was the owner, noted collector and friend of the shop Andreas Mohringer and his wife Friederike. We have been very fortunate to have worked with Andreas over the years on a number of exceptional projects. His commitment to preserving this, and many other, historically significant automobiles make him an especially worthy recipient.
The 335 Sport won Best of Show at the 2019 Cavallino Classic to become eligible for the honor. As a testament to its quality, the 335 Sport was also nominated last year after winning Best of Show at the 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. A Best in Class win at its 2017 Pebble Beach debut round out a very gratifying stretch for this very special Ferrari.
We are extremely proud to acknowledge that this is our third “Best of the Best” award. The magnificent 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn-Kurier, which we restored in 2006, won the award in 2011 after winning the Concours d’Elegance of America. It was nominated for Best of the Best again this year after winning Best of Show at Amelia Island. While the perfectly proportioned 1956 Ferrari 166MM/195S Berlinetta Le Mans won the award for 2008 after winning Best of Show at Villa d’Este.
These awards are wonderful to receive, and thanks goes to a long list of talented craftsman and exceptional owners like Mr. Mohringer who make it possible for us to present our very best work.
