After the astounding success of the classic 300 SL "Gullwing" Coupe, American importer, Max Hoffman, convinced the staff at Mercedes-Benz that America desired an open version. With traditional doors replacing the iconic "Gullwing" style and a soft top or a removable hard top defining the roof line, the visual changes were quite clear. But the 300 SL Roadster was much more than a face lift and a roof change on a classic race car. Better handling was now derived from the low pivot swing axle and had a completely restructured space-frame chassis, providing the Roadster with exceptional handling abilities. Dunlop Disc brakes were now standard on the Roadster as of March of 1961 providing a safer and more confident driving experience. Horsepower had been increase from 220 to 240 by the addition of a "Sport-Cam" to make up for the additional 200lbs added from the coupe. The early Roadsters still used a cast iron engine block, which provided a much more durable and quieter ride compared to the alloy block used in the last 209 Roadsters. Many other amenities such as luggage capacity and roll down windows proved that Mercedes-Benz had answered the American demand for a luxury, sports-car.

This Roadster is a long time member of the Paul Russell and Company family. It comes from a private collection in impeccable condition, where it has been cared for over 25 years. It was first brought to us in 1993 for a full, body off restoration. It was restored to a factory color, Light Blue Metallic (MB-353) with a gorgeous Cognac interior, done using traditional methods. It sports a dark navy soft top as well as a removable hard top in body color that still owns its original crate. Since its full restoration, the car has been painstakingly taken care of and serviced annually by Paul Russell and Company. Service records can accurately show the quality of care this Roadster has seen during each of the past 25 years. With less than 10,000 miles on the engine since a full rebuild, this Roadster is ready for your next tour or show.

We know this car through and through, as we have personally tightened every bolt and dressed every panel. The service records and the documentation of the restoration serve as a platform on the difficulty to duplicate a car of this caliber at a reasonable cost.
