Phil Hill has referred to the 335 S as “… a race driver’s dream, one of those points in a car’s development when both power and handling peak at the same time.” “…my all-time favorite Ferrari.” Ferrari historian Michael T. Lynch referred to this Ferrari 335 Sport as “one of the most significant Ferraris'”.
The last of four 335 Ss built, it was commissioned by Chinetti Motors for the American market. 0764 was built with a more rigid frame, a more powerful engine, and the pontoon-fendered body by Scaglietti. Owner Alan Connell drove it for a very successful race season in 1959, including a 1st in the inaugural SCCA National race at Daytona.
Our commission from the car owner was to present 0764 as raced at Daytona in November 1959, in its original NART blue. Technical issues always exist in any restoration, but one of the biggest challenges for this project was how to ascertain the original shade of blue. Two people were a great help in making our final decision. Luigi Chinetti Jr. photographed the car at the New York Auto Show, as well as at its racing debut at Road America. David Seielstad saw the car in the early 60s in a shop in Gaithersburg, MD.
