Much is made of the Concours awards and accolades our great and historic restored cars receive – and deservedly so. Yet all dimensions of car collecting are important and rewarding. The driving experience adds so much to round out an owner’s understanding of and appreciation for their classic. While an actual vintage track event may be beyond an owner’s interest, there are a growing number of days-long road rallies being hosted both here and abroad. Local tours are being added on the traditional show field events, and other enthusiasts are organizing caravans leading up to an event.
The sound track, the smells, and even the dynamic image of the car is so different than the view on the lawn. There is great satisfaction in driving a good performing car while leading, or following, a companion classic along winding country roads. McKeel Hagerty from Hagerty Insurance recently hosted an event through some fondly-remembered driving roads of central California, inviting a wide-ranging mix of both concours and unrestored classics. The fall is the time for the perennial favorite Colorado Grand, with the New England 1000 and the 300SL Classic following close on its heels. Tours can be day long or week long, hosted by car clubs or private organizations, limited to a particular marque or era, or wide-open to all.
