The week began a day late, as Paul and senior technician Chris Hammond dealt with a winter weather flight delay. Arriving at the Revs Institute on Sunday evening, they just managed to get set-up for their presentations in the “Preserving the Future of the Past” program, discussing the processes and challenges encountered in the re-restoration of Miles Collier’s historic 1951 Porsche 356SL in two modules and serving on a discussion panel in another.
After three thought provoking days at the 10th Biennial “Meaningful Car Symposium”, Thursday began early, driving across Florida, and performing a pre-purchase inspection on behalf of a client along the way.
Friday morning was for meeting with the car transporters and the car owners, unloading the cars that had left our shop a few days earlier. This group included a historic Ferrari 250GT Interim Berlinetta, sent to our shop for service before Amelia and its return to the Simeone Museum for owner Luigi Chinetti Jr.
Also on the truck was the 1963 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, debuted in 2016, and the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster, debuted in 1995. Both cars had been back at our shop for freshening and service work in anticipation of the Amelia Island Concours weekend.
Both Friday and Saturday occupied Sales manager Alex Finigan and protégé Evan Clary surveying the available auction cars and the state of the market, and reporting back to clients.

Show day Sunday, cars start lining up before dawn awaiting access to the show field. This year we had the generous help of some students from the Auto Restoration program at McPherson College to escort and help present cars to the judges on the field. Paul was already off to his Judge’s Meeting.

On the day of the Concours, the Collier Museum proudly presented the freshly restored Porsche 356SL. The red Aston Martin DB5 Convertible (pictured, above) won an Amelia Award. Two of our ‘mature’ restorations were top award recipients: the Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster (on the right), was presented with the Chopard Timeless Excellence Award, and the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn-Kurier (on the left), which we debuted in 2006, won Best of Show.
